Chapter Twenty-Four

Sable’s black tail slunk through the swirling sandstorm. Soren followed closely behind, watching the cat bound through the blinding storm. All signs of footsteps were washed away from the sands, but Seph’s cries for help had vanished, so Sable was Soren’s best chance of finding her.

I have to find her.

I have to.

The bounty isn’t for her, it’s for me…

It’s definitely a trap. But I don’t care. She’s all I have left, tying me to this world.

I have to find Persephone…

Soren was still somewhere in the courtyard. He could tell by the ancient statues he and the cat rushed by, but how far from his friends, he couldn’t tell.

The cat stopped suddenly, pawing at a grate in the ground… a grate that led into the sewers.

Soren didn’t hesitate. The grate lid was already half-open, laying haphazardly askew. He dug his fingers in and pried it away. Sable leaped down into the darkness, and Soren did the same—Firelight sharp as death clutched in his hand.

Below, the world was dark. The rushing sands above were deafening. They howled and moaned as if it were their last gasping breaths. Below, though, the world was still. A chill took him, and his breath misted before his face. He had no torch, nor light from any source, but the cat’s keen eyes beamed a shimmering green as she looked up at him before scampering off into the darkness, further down the long tunnel.

He followed.

His eyesight adjusted, and the storm continued to wreak havoc above. Sable led the way, sniffing and bounding around the thin stream of water through the round-ceiling tunnel. Ahead, a shimmer of light glowed. It was at the far end of the tunnel.

“Seph!” he called down, the word echoing as if in a deep, dark cave.

There was no response, but he ran. He ran past Sable, who noticed and sped up to run at his side.

As he ran, the light intensified, and he yelled again, but no answer. Once he got to the end of the tunnel, he stopped. He swallowed hard. His eyes narrowed as he glared into the room at the tunnel’s end. It was a junction between more tunnels in the city’s underbelly, with a single torch on the ground, gasping for air.

Above the torch was the familiar face of the bounty hunter Gideon Shaw. His wrinkled face tightened as he sneered, the scar on the side of his face folding along the wrinkles. Beads of sweat sparkled on his brow as the black braid of his thinning hair fell before the maroon armor on his chest.

Seph was beneath him, on her knees, both her hands clutched to his forearm, that wrapped around her throat like a snake, squeezing. Her pale face was flushed pink as she struggled for the air to speak.

“Soren,” she mouthed, with his name only just audible. Her face was already showing the signs of bruising from what seemed like punches to her face. Her staff was nowhere to be seen, but Gideon had his whip lying behind him on the stone floor, ready to send flying.
